Here below are my 5 favorite concerts I have ever seen on the Lowlands Festival. I visited 10 editions of the greatest festival of Holland!

Of course you don’t have to agree with that, it were for several reasons just my personal 5 favorites!

I’m Stephan and I know Lowlands since 1994. I’ve been there 8 years in a row, but missed it since 2001. 2009 is going to be my comeback!
I discovered this festival in 1993, the first edition. I didn’t went because I didn’t want to go alone.
A year later I had a summer of festivals. It started on the first friday of May at the Moulin Blues festival in Ospel, NL and I chose A Campingflight To Lowlands Paradise as the end of my tour.
As a built up to one of the best festivals I ever visited, I’m going to tell you the history of this massive event. It will be a mix of facts and personal memories.
As we creeping closer to L-Day at 21 August, I would give my comments on the line-up; as would I give you some names I would like to see there.
I will leave you with the reason why I din’t attend it for 8 years:
Lowlands was for me the breedingpond for new music & arts. It was all about discovering & enyoing. As the fesitval went bigger and bigger; the names became bigger and there was less room for new artists. Also the height of a near 70,000 people was too much…They hit the roof and after 2001 there was a set back of visitors, now slowly building up again to be a sold-out event.

Lowlands Takes place at the Walibi World Theme Park in Biddinghuizen which is about an hour from Amsterdam. There is great flight connections into Amsterdam, and good public transport to the festival site.

Basement Jaxx
In the Lowlands is colorful society, does not danceact better than Basement Jaxx, the South London duo like no other that a festival of all denominations can put on his head. It does more than a decade or so anyway, and here in the polder were Biddinghuizense their house grooves ever completely dissolve. And not just two, they do look like dancers, singers and rappers in, plus a drum program. Self crawl behind them buttons and strings. Enough ammunition so the whole house over the mass range from collapse, with a balkan beat here, as there baile funk, and country banjo to guitar rock.

BON ISCELLANEOUS
Hi, what a great winter we have this year. Or bon hiver, as the French say. It h not speak it, so did singer / songwriter Justin Vernon enjoyable way to choose his pseudonym. His music sounds a bit like this: minimalist and winters, but with a fire crackling fireplace in a lonely cabin deep in the forest. This is also where the high-minded American debut recording and let his beard, so that he fits into the latest lo-fi folk beard community around Fleet Foxes and Iron & Wine. His two fellow band members are glad barber, but that aside.

CARAVAN LA PASSE
And you thought balkan beats the best of their time had? That’s what you pretty bad. La Caravane Passe because it is always balkanbal! Well, balkan, in the pressure cooker of this French company is just a bit of everything smells like party music. From hoempa to flamenco, from klezmer to Tzigane, from surf to punk, and five rock-’n-roll gypsy tent almost to the boiling point have had a magician with a little luck also ’s such a flapper in a disturbing dansseñorita stylish polkadotjurk appear. And that language which they sing? That’s Plèchtiaans their own lingo, spoken between Paris and the Black Sea!

CROO CHERRY
Mixing hip hop with house and you do not get Croo Cherry, aka the Milan DJs / remixers Phra & Bot, even if both types are indeed their main influences. But when the Italians beat the solder, shot soon a lot of loose threads and a nice fat, Knetter disturbing thing. In order to Leuken mixte Croo Cherry through many other styles, from electro to inflammatory favela booty beats. The result is a glitchy mishmash of hard beats, inflammatory vocals, funky bass lines and lots of cut and paste the FRAYING still there. Sexy as fuck, to be exact. Not for nothing were they already on Raw, also for us in the polder!

Entry to the site verges on gladiatorial: tickets in mouths, flags raised – the long road to the entrance, and it really is long, is a spectacle in itself. As a group of frenzied Dutch dragging a fisher price pram full of beer run past a Swedish contingent with an inflatable sex doll, you realise its going to be an interesting weekend.

Seven campsites, all with hot showers and flushing toilets is a welcome change to British festivals that refuse to provide anything more than a hole. By dusk on the Thursday night, the city of Lowlands is complete with its 60,000 residents. Entertainment for the night comes in the form of a giant Duracell battery tent. It’s a surreal experience as the glow stick wielding indie kids happily dance alongside 50-year-old longhaired, leather clad Nightwish fans with Lowlands wristbands up their arm dating back to the early 90’s. It’s not for everyone, but by the following night 10 clubs, several bars, and a handful of cinemas will open.

By Friday morning, the giant red and white chimneys that line the entrance to the music site begin to pump out multicoloured steam to mark the officially beginning of the weekend. First impressions on entry are that the organisers have thought of pretty much everything one could want from a festival. Street theatre groups keep up the laid back atmosphere – with my personal favourite led by a bald Dutch man in a fluorescent pink lycra jumpsuit orchestrating ridiculous numbers of people skipping over one giant rope. Oxfam are represented by nurses giving free hugs, a hippie market and massage tent lies just behind, slush puppy vendors carving drinks straight from a block of artic ice are dotted around, whilst a four-player game of giant tetris, controlled by the movements of the four doors of a car, starts up opposite.

The rest of the festival site set up is, in comparison to the top British festivals, tiny. The entrance to the furthest away stage takes a few minutes and this undoubtedly helps Lowlands retain its intimacy. Coupled with the friendly Dutch population, the atmosphere is leagues ahead of any British festival. With ten stages in total, only one of which is completely uncovered, the timetable typically billed as alternative and progressive has something for every taste.

Although the line up this year didn’t quite live up to previous high standards – highlights included the haunting Sigur Ros, given the longest set of any band of the weekend, the typically spectacular stage show of Flaming Lips, the frenetic atmosphere of Gogol Bordello and the ever humble Laura marling. I could try and get away without mentioning them, but the Sex Pistols crawl their way into the review for all the wrong reasons. Johnny Rotten’s racist remarks didn’t sit well with the chilled Dutch crowd – the characteristic ensuing arrogant performance was verging on embarrassing, to such an extent that Asakusa Jinta, an obscure Japanese band drew a crowd that far overfilled their small tent. Despite the incredible atmosphere including a complete lack of violence, reliable top line-ups, and a full theme park next-door, Lowlands remains somewhat of a hidden gem on the festival circuit. Half reluctant to even write this review in the vague hope it will retain its elusive status, Lowlands does deserve to be seen by more. When the festival ticket and return flights from anywhere in the country amount to less than a single Reading ticket – it is baffling why the British invasion has held off.
